Film Brief: Barbara

Barbara (now in theaters) is a small, low-budget German film, set in 1980 East Germany.  There is a lot to recommend this movie, but a good, cohesive and complete storyline is not one of them.  It also lacks the strong empathetic drive that would otherwise boost it.  Still worthwhile if you want to see a low-budget German movie depicting life behind the iron curtain; 5/10.  For a considerably better tale depicting the everyday harrows of life under communism, check out 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007, Romania), which perhaps ironically given the similar subject matter was the last film I saw at that same theater, the then Laemmle’s Sunset 5 down and across from the Chateau Marmont.
