I LIKE THAT Matthew McConaughey is doing all these more indie projects: a small role in last year’s Bernie, earlier this year starring in Mud, and slimming down dramatically to play a gaunt AIDS victim for Dallas Buyers Club. The movie features fine performances by McConaughey and Jared Leto, and I liked Jennifer Garner more here than anything she’s been in.
But Dallas Buyers Club felt flat to me until about halfway through, when it began to endear itself to me and I started to really enjoy it. Though these are life and death struggles we are talking about, and a true story as well, the film never completely shook itself of that sense of flatness — it never sings. Not strikingly memorable, it is a good movie, but not a great one. 7/10
