Stare Deeply into Big Eyes

Big Eyes - poster large

IT OCCURRED TO ME AFTER watching Big Eyes that 2014 suddenly became the year of the true story.  Besides Big Eyes, there’s SelmaWild, The Imitation Game, Mr. Turner, American Sniper, Unbroken, Foxcatcher, and the probable best picture Oscar winner The Theory of Everything… all arriving within the last couple months.

Big Eyes - text blockBig Eyes is a delightful movie, and will put a smile on your face.  If you are expecting the Tim Burton flourish aplenty, you will be disappointed — it only appears in a touch here or there.  But that is hardly detrimental, for Big Eyes demonstrates once again that a true story is at its most powerful when told in a straightforward way, without a lot of cinematic tomfoolery getting in the way.  A lesson that the makers of Wild never learned.

Amy Adams does a fine job here, and should be a leading contender for the Best Actress Oscar.  Also nice to see Christoph Waltz expanding his oeuvre.  8/10
