“truckloads of pluck and eye makeup”

I don’t always agree with the Times’ Manohla Dargis — case in point with Boyhood — but there’s no denying she’s an excellent writer.  I had mentioned Jupiter Ascending, the Wachowskis’ return to science fiction, but the movie has been broadly panned and I doubt I will see it — so read Ms. Dargis’s review instead.  The Wachowskis brought us The Matrix, one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, and Bound, an exceptionally fun edge-of-your-seat personal thriller and favorite of mine, but have had trouble following up their earlier successes.  The Coens the Wachowskis are not.
